Native Highlight: @TexasFoodGawker's Favorite Spots in Austin

Native Highlight: @TexasFoodGawker

We aren't sure what it is about Austin TX, but it breeds some amazing individuals that have a keen eye for top-notch food pics! Ginny, the owner of Texas Food Gawker (@texasfoodgawker) is one of those leading the way. She's on fire right now finding incredible dishes and having fun doing it!

We highlighted why she started @texasfoodgawker and are giving you the inside scoop on her tops spots in Austin!

The inspiration behind the account

I have always loved food. I started @texasfoodgawker the summer going into my freshmen year of college, really just as a way of documenting the delicious food I was eating. Initially, I wanted my friends and family to see amazing pictures of what I was eating, but after a couple months the account was gaining traction amongst people all over Texas.

Food has always been a passion for Ginny, so she was always looking for a way to express that and share it with the world. Luckily for us, Instagram came around and Ginny hopped on it.

What started out as a way to share pictures with friends and family (as opposed to texting them) turned into one of the best ways to find new places to eat around Austin!

What got you so hooked on the Austin food scene?

I grew up in Houston, and have a few spots I really love there, but I go to college in Austin and have truly fallen in love with the food scene here. Austin is known as such a live-music hub, but I believe it is an awesome place for people who love food. The thing I love the most about the Austin food scene is that it is always changing. I have an ever-growing list of new restaurants in Austin that I am dying to try.

College brought her to Austin and it was love at first sight. Great food combined with amazing live music makes for an experience unlike anywhere else! With Austin being one of those "new age cities", the changing food landscape turns out some pretty innovative dishes that are so unique. We're just thankful Ginny is there to help us reach them!

We started the Native Highlight to help people get a deeper understanding of the incredible individuals behind the accounts we love. It's amazing to hear why they fell in love with the food in their area. As for that ever-growing list, we're excited to see which places are on it. We will just have to keep following @texasfoodgawker to find out!

Whatever it takes

I am not ashamed to do whatever it takes to get the best picture, and sometimes when I’m incessantly moving angles and changing the plate arrangements, my friends are so embarrassed. Sometimes they are embarrassed, but most of the time they are just annoyed that it takes me 5-10 minutes to get all the shots of food that I want.

If we didn't have people like Ginny that are willing to take on the embarrassment to get awesome food pics, Instagram would be a pretty boring place. These are the types of pictures that you take one look at and immediately get hungry. We admire that kind of determination, and @texasfoodgawker is definitely someone we want on our side.

Why you need to follow @texasfoodgawker right now

... I do a good job of keeping my feed very diverse, featuring tons of different restaurants and types of food.

Ginny let us know how much pride she takes in making sure you get everything you need to make a decision in her posts. The picture is high quality and shows you what the dish is all about. Unlike other accounts that leave you asking "I wish I knew the name of that dish", Texas Food Gawker makes sure to tell you exactly what it is she's eating.

We also love how different the places are. It doesn't matter if you have a sweet tooth, love a nice latte, or prefer some mouthwatering pizza, @texasfoodgawker has something for you!
