Native Highlight: Food connoisseur Bread Butter NYC talks her favorite places in NYC

Native Highlight: @Bread Butter NYC

Nowadays, everyone is trying to label themselves as an "expert". Stock "experts", life coaching "experts", or "here's how to get rich in 5 easy steps experts" are popping up all over the place... but that's not to say there aren't any experts among the pretenders.

Marisel Salazar, the owner of the Instagram account Bread Butter NYC (@breadbutternyc) is no doubt an expert in the food and drink scene in NYC. Don't believe us? Well, let's check out her resume: For starters, she has landed on Refinery29's Top 10 NYC Food Instagrams to Follow and Zagat's Top 100 Food Instagrammers in the U.S.. On top of that, she's part of PureWow's The Coterie and Tasting Table's The Tastemakers. Still not convinced? How about that she's written for Eater, Tasting Table,, and the list goes on.

They say it takes 10,000 hours to truly be a Master of your craft, and Marisel has definitely hit that mark!

The Inspiration Behind The Account

@Breadbutternyc originally started as an extension of my website portfolio. All of the projects that didn’t necessarily fit into a story written for outlets made it onto my Instagram, and it grew into a more personal look into my life. Almost like a food diary.

As if she didn't have enough on her plate already, Marisel originally was inspired to create Bread Butter NYC as another avenue to express herself creatively. We love the idea of the "food diary" where you can get an inside look at the life of an expert of a food scene that is arguably the best in the world.

We started the Native Highlight to learn more about the people behind the famous Instagram accounts and Marisel's goal to help others create an emotional tie with her posts falls right in line with our mission!

Why the NYC food scene?

I love exploring a city and its culture through food. It is one of the more accessible parts of learning and experiencing a new environment. There is always something new to discover in NYC which keeps it exciting. And on the flip side, there are tried and true classics that have a deep history that is comforting.

NYC is the perfect place to explore because the options are endless. Every single day, new incredible places pop up. For the casual New Yorker, it can be overwhelming, but for Marisel, she loves it. She loves the variety in NYC. Her life consists of discovering new and amazing experiences, while also falling back on the classics that made her fall in love with the NYC food scene.

Whatever it takes to get the shot

I take a billion photos before selecting “the one” that you see on @breadbutternyc. It’s not as easy as it looks. There is so much creative brainstorming and conceptualizing involved. And all the grief that some Instagrammers get for standing on chairs? Well, that is how you capture the beautiful images you see online!

We've been seeing this a lot in our Native Highlights. There's so much work that goes into each photo. The billions of takes, the embarrassment of being judged, and the will to do whatever it takes to create a product their followers love! Instagram food bloggers have an amazing platform to promote the awesome food in their city, and they want to make sure it's perfect!
