5 Philly Bars Near Eastern State Penitentiary For After You're Scared S*&tless

Eastern State Penitentiary is consistently on the top haunted experiences in the US and even in the world. So that's another thing Philly can brag about, and we definitely brag about it. Instead of calling your mom after, telling her you love her, and then crawling into the fetal position, we put together a list of bars to hit after you go through hell. Oh, but still call your mom and tell her you love her.

1) Paris Wine Bar

2303 Fairmount Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19130

#ParisWineBar tonight 9-12 ;)

Great For: Wine Sampling, Dates, Live Music, Coping With Fear

Specials: 1/2 Priced Wine on Thursday, Live Jazz Friday & Saturday

Paris Wine Bar definitely doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Maybe it's because it is situated close to the Penitentiary, and people are scared to check it out. Who knows? What we do know is that this is a great place to sip on wine after going through hell and back. They have wine on draft, that's right, ON DRAFT, so you can easily calm your nerves with some local wines.

Local Scoop: Philly Natives like to hit this bar for a laid back type of night, perfect to cope with the uncontrollable shaking from being spooked. They even have improv murder mystery dinners every once in a while.

2) Urban Saloon

2120 Fairmount Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19130

Great For: Beer Flights, Comedy, Forgetting The Sights You Just Saw

Specials: Mon – Fri, 5 – 7 pm $1 off all drafts, $5.5 glasses of house wine ½ price buffalo cauliflower, hummus & chicken tenders

Urban Saloon is right near Eastern State Penitentiary so you don't have to do much walking at all! We mentioned them as one of our dog friendly bars. They regularly host comedians here so it might be a good idea to stop here for a laugh after heading to ESP for some haunted thrills. A huge change up that will help with the nightmares!

Native Scoop: The locals love the SNL style comedy performances that go on at Urban Saloon. It brings in a solid crowd of 20-somethings just looking to hang out, have a few laughs, and sip on some beer flights.

3) The Black Taxi

745-747 N 25th St, Philadelphia, PA 19130

Great For: Hidden Gems, Guinness, Watching The English Premier League

Specials: Happy Hour Everyday 5-7 pm $1 off drafts and drinks

The Black Taxi is one of those neighborhood bars that the locals usually try to keep quiet. However, they are opening up to us because they feel bad for how scared you'll be after the prison. Just locals looking after you! Try your luck at Quizzo, although the locals are pretty good so you better bring your A game.

Native Scoop: Locals rave about the Irish feel and their ability to pour a proper pint of Guinness. After all, it is a lost art in some places. A lot of the Philly Natives say hit this spot before moving on to Urban Saloon.

4) Jack's Firehouse

2130 Fairmount Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19130

Great For: Comfort Food, Bloody Brunch, Late Night Eats

Specials: None that we know of, we'll keep our eyes out

Another one of the bars that is directly across for the Eastern State Penitentiary, the Jack's Firehouse is here to save your night. Located inside a 19th century firehouse building (hence the name), Jack's is the perfect place to grab some comfort food after that traumatic experience you had.

Native Scoop: Philly Natives list this as their go to when they are in the mood for some chicken breasts and bacon mac. Maybe you want to hit this for brunch before to scope out the area, their bloody's are a huge hit! Maybe if you have a lot of those, you won't experience the bloody's in ESP... wishful thinking.

5) The Bishop's Collar

2349 Fairmount Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19130

Happy St Patty's Day 🍀🍺☘️

Great For: Showing Off Those Pipes, Sing-Alongs, Low Key Vibes

Specials: Happy Hour 1:00 - 3:00 pm $1 off everything; daily food specials

There is a lot of rumbling that Bishop's has one of the best Jukeboxes in Philly. What is better way to overcome the pure fear you just had when you were separated at the Penitentiary than to get together and scream some sing alongs.

Native Scoop: Philly Natives like to head here for the music and low key vibes. The beer list isn't overwhelmingly long, but they make sure to pick some gems for you to try out.
